Advanced Solutions for Everyday Challenges

Did you know that many issues pertaining to the mouth or face can be treated with specialized dental solutions?

TMJ disorders are known as Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). Untreated TMD can cause tension headaches, pain in the jaw muscles and joints, ear fullness/aching, pain with chewing, restricted mouth opening, and noises or clicking in the jaw joint(s).

Common Causes of TMD include

  • Clenching and grinding your teeth
  • Arthritis
  • Trauma or injury
  • Disk damage
  • Genetics (research is still underway)

Lake Superior Dental offers treatments for TMD. During your initial TMD consultation, we will evaluate your range of motion and any noise in your jaw joint, examine areas around the jaw for pain, and determine whether any any teeth could be causing the pain. If necessary, we may suggest taking radiographs for more information. We aim for conservative TMD treatment. Mild cases can be resolved with consistent home care, while others may require physical therapy, splint therapy, counseling or medications. TMD cases that go beyond our scope—those requiring surgery or Botox—will be referred to our trusted specialist network.

Sleeping well is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, and dentists are uniquely positioned to assist physicians in identifying patients with sleep apnea issues. The team at Lake Superior Dental can conduct a brief screening for obstructive sleep apnea and may encourage you to speak with your physician or a sleep specialist.

If you receive an obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis, we may be able to assist in your treatment if a CPAP isn’t working. We use a mandibular advancement device to help move your lower jaw forward, thus opening a portion of your upper airway. These devices are an effective way to treat a wide spectrum of sleep apnea cases. If you’re interested in a mandibular advancement device, we will conduct an exam to determine if an appliance may work for you.

If you have a missing tooth or are planning for an extraction, a dental implant is a popular option to replace your natural tooth. An implant starts with a titanium post (root) placed in your jaw. Once the implant has bonded with the bone, an abutment (a connector) is attached to the implant. Finally, a custom-made implant crown (artificial tooth) is placed on top of the abutment, restoring the look and function of the missing tooth. Beyond replacing a single tooth, implants may offer a solid foundation for multi-tooth replacement, including dentures. Lake Superior Dental offers in-house implant placement but also works closely with multiple oral surgeons in our area to suit your specific needs.
